Mothers’ Union was set up in 1876 by Mary Sumner
the wife of a parish priest in Winchester.
It is now an organisation of more than 3 million members in over
70 countries, all working towards improving family life in our communities
through practical action and prayer.
Mission Statement
The Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation which promotes the well-being of families world-wide.
We achieve this by:
Purpose, Aim and Objectives
The purpose of the Mothers’ Union is the advancement
of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.
In order to carry out this Aim, its Objectives are:
1. To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and
promote its wider understanding
2. To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith
and life of the Church
3. To maintain a world wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer,
worship and service
4. To promote conditions in society favourable to family life and
the protection of children
5. To help those whose family life has met with adversity
YOCKLETON
MOTHERS' UNION
Branch Leader: Mrs
Christine Jones
(Diocesan Prayer and Spirituality Unit Co-ordinator for Hereford
Diocese)
Branch Secretary: Mrs Irene Thomas
Yockleton Mothers’ Union meets on the 3rd Tuesday in each month usually in the home of one of its members. At the moment we have 11 members, and membership is open to both men and women. Membership is open to all who have been baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity and who declare their support for the Aims and Objectives of the society,
Although few in numbers we are an active branch, taking part in many varied activities.
In addition to monthly meetings,
We have a monthly "Knit and Natter" afternoon when we
knit clothes for the Special Care Baby Unit at the RSH, and toys,
scarves, hats and gloves for the annual Christmas Shoe box appeal
which we organise in the group of parishes.
Over the past few years we have organised and led a meditative service
during Holy Week.
We organise the annual Women's World Day of Prayer service.
We support the South Shropshire
Women's Refuge by collecting toiletries for mums and children,
and toys, especially cuddly toys,
for the children.
We are also involved in the Diocesan "Travelling On" projects
which support travelling families, and for this we collect simple
reading books, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and baby food to help
families in need.
